When Waste Becomes Energy

A sustainability challenge becomes more meaningful when it moves from intention to infrastructure. At the VNRVJIET hostels, a biogas plant is doing exactly that by creating a productive use for food waste generated on campus.

The plant underwent trial runs between May and July 2026 and was formally inaugurated on 30 July. During the trial phase, it supplied an average of 10 kg of gas to the hostel kitchen. Around 150 kg of food waste was being fed into the digester every day, with the intake expected to reach 300 kg per day by the end of August. Full utilisation is planned over the following six months.

The significance is practical: food waste that would otherwise remain a disposal challenge becomes an input for energy generation. For an educational institution, the initiative also turns sustainability into something visible and operational - a campus system that students and staff can see at work.
